Exploring the Fraser Valley
On Saturday, September 30, 2017, we travelled to the Fraser Valley in British Columbia. We first stopped at the Stó:lō Nation, located about an hour away from Vancouver. We were guided by Sonny. He is the Cultural Advisor and Stó:lō Historian for the Stó:lō Research and Resource Management Centre. We learned about the political and social amalgamation of several Stó:lō communities. He also told us many stories about their history and beliefs.
Afterwards, we stopped for lunch at Bridal Veil Falls before making our way to the Othello Tunnels. They are located at the Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park. We had a quick hike along a tree-lined path before reaching the Othello Tunnels. They are a set of five tunnels connected by bridges. The views of the river were beautiful and we took pictures on the river bank!
To end the day, we went to the Hell’s Gate Airtram. This is a popular tourist attraction in the Fraser Valley. It is a suspended gondola between two mountain ranges. We took a gondola over the mighty Fraser River towards the Hell’s Gate observation deck. Once on the other side, many of us enjoyed ice cream and fudge from the gift shop. We also took some photos on the suspension bridge, including a fun jump shot to express how much we enjoyed the whole experience!
