Curling @ Marpole Curling Club

Feb 14, 2019

On Saturday, February 9, 2019, we went to Marpole Curling Club to learn and enjoy the sport of curling. Although curling has Scottish origins, it was popularized by Canada. The basic rule of curling is to slide stones on a sheet of ice towards concentric targets. Two teams compete, and whichever team has stone nearest to the middle target gets a point.

We reached there at 2 p.m. via public transit. The instructors gave us a short safety briefing and instructed to get geared up to play. Firstly, we were instructed to clean our shoes. Then, we applied slip-on sliders to our shoes, which helps walk on the curling sheet. The curling sheet is not the same as ice rink. It has a gravel like texture, which helps the stone to move easily and curl. As all of us were playing it for the first time, so we were given some training first on delivery, sweeping, type of shots and some strategies. It took some time for us to learn, but soon we realized how fun the sport is. Soon all the students were able to play, and actual games were played.
The event was a huge success, as it was never done before, and students loved to learn about a new sport. We had a great time there.
