On January 13, 2017, the School of Management’s Department of Hospitality Studies partnered with the NYC NAF Academies and the American Management Association Operation Enterprise (AMA) and held a Student Leadership Conference. Over 300 New York City high school students from 25 high schools participated in the conference, which consisted of a full day of workshops at the NYIT Manhattan campus. The Student Leadership Conference appeared as a press release in the Queen’s Courier on March 1, 2017.

The NYIT Department of Hospitality students, along with NYIT student Admission Ambassadors, helped to create the entire day’s workshop series which began at 8:00 a.m. and lasted till 4:00 p.m. The mission of this event was to provide high school students an opportunity to attend various workshops that would enhance each young adults’ understanding of how to prepare for their future careers as well as gain insight of what it is like to become a college student. This event was coordinated to connect high school students to role models, mentors, and academic and professional leaders who could provide guidance to the student’s future life endeavors, which included professional enrichment presentations on resume writing, tips for effective presentation skills, and how to shine in an interview.

The NYIT Department of Hospitality Studies students presented an array of workshops that pertained to “life as an NYIT student.” The current School of Management students highlighted NYIT academic curriculum, clubs and associations, athletics, scholarship and financial aid opportunities, experiential experiences, such as internships and industry partnerships, study abroad, and community outreach.

Additionally, thanks to NYIT Admissions, each of the 300 students received a gift bag filled with NYIT brochures, literature and memorable gift items.

Thanks to the success of this event - The NYIT Department of Hospitality Studies is currently creating a “NYIT Student – High School Student Mentorship Program” with NAF Hospitality & Tourism (AOHT) beginning spring 2017.
