Purpose Driven Career Development with Brad Karsh

Feb 28, 2024

In this episode, our host John Rebecchi (M.B.A. ’83), Ph.D. welcomes Brad Karsh, Founder and CEO of JB Training Solutions —a boutique learning and development company dedicated to supporting professionals throughout their career journey. As an accomplished public speaker and executive coach, Brand has made appearances on CNN, CNBC, and Dr. Phil, while also being featured in renowned publications like The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Fortune, and USA Today.

While we recognize that many of our podcast listeners are New York Tech students starting on their professional journey, we discuss the essentials of finding a job in the digital age. Karsh emphasizes not only the importance of refining your resume but also placing networking as a top priority. Karsh explained that many of us fall into the trap of “relying too much on the digital part of the digital age.” He suggests reaching out to college resources such as Career Services or campus clubs and association in order to build connections in which can help get your foot in the door.

As an expert in the workplace and a former recruiting director, Karsh has reviewed thousands of resumes from college students. He noticed that the candidates who stands out most are those who can effectively express not just their goals and identity, but most importantly, their accomplishments. He emphasizes, “Most organization conduct what we call behavioral interviews. So, they want to understand the ‘hows’ and the ‘whys’ about you as supposed to the what.” He recommends taking a 360-degree perspective of all the items on your resume and be prepared to discuss it during the interview.

In order to advance within an organization and distinguish oneself regardless of the job market, Karsh advises on going above and beyond. While in academia, students can earn high grades for meeting and excelling in course requirements. However, in the professional world, as Karsh explains, “if you do what you are told, and you do it well, that is a bare bones minimum to keep a job." Particularly for those just starting their careers, Karsh proposes reflecting on ways to excel by asking, “How can I go above and beyond? What can I do to prove my value and how can I make myself indispensable so when they think about promotion, I am on top of that list? And if they think about layoffs, I am not on that list at all."

In describing one word that best represents who he is, Karsh choose “joie de vivre” a French expression for enjoyment of life and showing passion for our pursuits.
