ASME Student Leadership Weekend in Philadelphia, PA
The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Student Leadership Weekend (SLW) is a series of events held across the U.S., designed to equip student chapters, section leaders, and advisors with leadership skills, teambuilding activities, and networking opportunities. It provides a platform for sharing best practices in running successful student sections, exchanging ideas, receiving training, and enhancing strategies to improve chapters.
On October 4-5th, six student leaders from the New York Tech ASME Section attended the Philadelphia event, gaining valuable insights and experiences.
During the weekend, participants took part in workshops focused on leadership development, managing student chapters, and maximizing ASME’s resources. The sessions provided actionable strategies on increasing student involvement, organizing successful events, and enhancing the section’s campus presence, equipping attendees to help their chapters thrive throughout the academic year.
Teambuilding exercises and networking were key components of the event. New York Tech’s attendees had the opportunity to exchange ideas with student leaders from other universities, exploring new approaches and building valuable connections for future collaboration. These interactions not only broadened their perspectives but also laid the groundwork for continued partnerships with ASME chapters across the country.
“SLW was a fantastic opportunity to connect with student sections from other schools. The sense of community fostered by the ASME HQ team was invaluable. I’m excited to apply the insights I gained to be a more effective leader for my section and its members on campus.” — Justin Catagua, Co-Vice President, ASME-LI
“I gained a deeper understanding of leadership through SOURCE and learned how to make events and collaborations both engaging and meaningful.” — Hanfaa Khatoon, Treasurer, ASME-LI
“The ASME SLW conference sharpened my leadership skills by helping me set clear goals for both my team and myself. I also discovered the wide range of resources ASME offers to its members. It was an incredible experience, and I highly recommend it to everyone.” — Alessandro Naccarato, Secretary, ASME-LI
“This experience helped me gain confidence in speaking and provided tremendous opportunities for both professional and personal growth. I’m truly grateful to NYIT and ASME for allowing me to be part of such an impactful community.” — Skylynn Kilfoil-Greaves, Former Co-Vice President, ASME-LI
Along with New York Tech's chapter, the SLW event was well attended by Penn State, UPenn, Yale University, Virginia Tech, Drexel University, West Virginia University, University of Rochester, to name a few.
