ASME Club's DEIA Initiative: Fostering Inclusivity and Equality

Sep 28, 2023

ASME club (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) has taken an innovative approach to kickstart the academic year by prioritizing their DEIA initiative (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility). This initiative is a testament to their commitment to fostering a more inclusive and welcoming environment within the student body.

At the forefront of this initiative is the ASME DEIA Task Force, established right at the beginning of the semester. Their primary goal is to educate students about DEIA within an inclusive and supportive setting. As a professional organization, ASME values the inclusion and participation of everyone in their club. Brianna J. Hobert, club president and a Mechanical Engineering Major, emphasized, "Our core value is to ensure that everyone feels welcome and included at our club."

Leading the DEIA Task Force is Vincent Carbone, a Mechanical Engineering Major, who plays a pivotal role as the point of contact for all DEIA-related matters within the club.

To launch their DEIA series, ASME invited subject matter experts from New York Tech, who spoke on various critical topics. Christine Alter, Associate Director of Counselling and Wellness, Evette Allen, Assistant Dean of DEI, Melissa Pond, Equity Officer and Title IX Coordinator, and Deanna Bertini, Associate Director of Student Engagement, shared valuable insights on what DEIA stands for, understanding microaggressions, and diffusing conflicts.

The event was a resounding success for the club, underlining ASME's passion for learning and growth within the CoECS community.
