Student Spotlight: Shiva Ghomi

Feb 05, 2014

Shiva Ghomi
MAURD Graduate Student

Background
Shiva has worked with numerous architectural firms in her native Iran. Her interest in observing and gaining hands-on experience in the field of architecture, urban design and planning in the United States, and specifically in Sustainable and Resilient urban design took her to New York City for her second master degree at NYIT’s MAURD program.

Internship at Design for Risk & Reconstruction Committee (DfRR)
As a second semester graduate student, Shiva was awarded an internship as Coordinator of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) New York Chapter urban resilience committee: Design for Risk and Reconstruction (DfRR). DfRR is dynamic, fast-growing, and “ripped-from-the-headlines” group of design professionals based at the AIA NYC Chapter Headquarters. DfRR is comprised of architects, planners, engineers, landscape architects, and others in private, public, and association organizations; all of whom are committed to making a more resilient city, region, and planet.

Shiva’s Role
Since DfRR Co-Chair Joan Capelin’s public relations firm concentrates on the design professions and building industry, Shiva is initially working from her office under her direct supervision for DfRR priorities, assignments, and quality oversight. Shiva’s responsibilities as DfRR coordinator include:

  • Working directly with DfRR leadership to pursue committee goals
  • Conducting research related to resiliency in design and planning
  • Developing DfRR background materials
  • Coordinating DfRR community outreach
  • Expanding DfRR media campaign
  • Developing DfRR events and related publicity
  • Attending DfRR meetings and events to coordinate and build network of contacts that will continue to beyond her studies
