The Dean's Honors Program is in Full Swing

Jun 06, 2022

After a bit of a hiatus, the College of Engineering & Computing Sciences re-introduced its Dean’s Honors Program, an academic-inclusive extra-curricular opportunity for qualified students who average a minimum of a CGPA of 3.2.

“The CoECS honors program was designed and continues to evolve for the single purpose of providing additional learning, networking and professional opportunities for our high performing students. By taking advantage of these additional challenging and rewarding opportunities, our Honors students would not only enhance their own career readiness, but also would earn institutional recognition for their accomplishments.” said Babak D. Beheshti, Ph.D., dean of the College of Engineering and Computing Sciences.

First-year students are sought out before their start at New York Tech. Existing students can enroll if they can provide proof of maintaining the GPA minimum for the program for at least two semesters.

The CoECS Student Engagement Specialist, Sarah Hessasta, assumes responsibility for the program. Some modifications were made to the previous program template with the intention of bridging gaps between other student-center initiatives across other departments. Students are now required to complete 40 hours of community services through the Consultants of Public Good and their Give Pulse app.

The program allows an opportunity to connect with a community, both on-campus and throughout New York State. Students receive automatic admission to the B.S. with Accelerated

M.S. Option and earn two degrees (B.S. and M.S.) in just five years. Students are eligible for special scholarships and receive a program-specific sweatshirt at their halfway marker.

By their senior year, students are awarded a certificate of completion and a cord at graduation.

The program is constantly evolving to improve for the benefit of the students. The Honors Program is eager to invite more of the CoCES student body to the program, and plan more creative events and sessions for its members. The goal for the 2022-2023 school year is to host social gatherings for the participants to connect with one another. Students who cannot maintain the GPA minimum for the program can apply for the alternative Leadership Certificate Program.
