NYITCOM alumni (D.O. ’11) Matthew Heller of the NYIT Center for Sports Medicine provided ringside medical coverage for not one but two great Pro Wrestling events in Woodside, NY. These events included Evolve 98,which featured Zack Sabre Jr. defending his Evolve Championship belt from Darby Allin, and New Horizon., in which the Fight the World Heavyweight Championship title was on the line in a match between Jack Gallow and Blake Morris. Dr.Heller is trained to provide ringside coverage and often brings NYIT College of Osteopathic students with him for hands-on learning experiences. β€œIt was a full day of championship matches and battles,” stated Dr. Heller. Although these fights may be choreographed beforehand, the injuries are not. That is where Dr. Heller can step in on-site to provide treatments and keep the showing going on. These opportunities allow students to put the skills they are learning in the classroom in to practice under supervision. Equally important, Dr. Heller is available in the Academic Health Care Center to help prevent health problems, such as heart disease and diabetes, which research suggests are more likely in some Professional Wrestlers than the general population.
