M.B.A. Student, Jie Wang, Takes on Every Opportunity in SoM

Oct 25, 2017

Jie Wang (Noboru Kurita) worked for many years throughout Asia before deciding to pursue her M.B.A. at NYIT. Once enrolled in the program, Jie decided to take advantage of every opportunity the school had to offer. She states, “NYIT has provided me with many opportunities to learn about myself and develop skills I need to succeed.”

So far, Jie has studies abroad in India, where she has learned about different business cultures and developed her management skills. Additionally, Jie has participated in various challenges developed by the School of Management. One of Jie’s favorite challenges is the Corporate Challenge. This past year, Jie and her team proposed a marketing plan for McGraw-Hill, which allowed the team to gain real-world experience. Jie states, “As a pretend client, we interviewed the company and analyzed many areas from the customer’s center and products.” Jie and her team won a prize for their work on this challenge. Jie Wang and her team also won a prize when they participated in the Corporate Challenge in 2016 because they provided an excellent plan to gain customers for the financial company, American Portfolio. Due to this positive experience, Jie decided to participate in other challenges. She participated in the Dean’s Teach for Technology Challenge, where she and her team won first place. Jie “still cannot forget the feeling of seeing the smiles appear on the faces of the clients when they used our website from our presentation.”

In addition to participating in challenges, Jie has been working as a Graduate Assistant for NYIT. She has held two positions, and within this position, she has been able to help the Director of the School of Management’s Center for Entrepreneurial Studies, Derrick Webster, with his research. Jie also had the opportunity to assist Derrick Webster with obtaining students for a conference held in Silicon Valley, titled, Open Silicon Valley. Through this experience, Jie and the other students were able to meet many international entrepreneurs, learn various techniques on how to start a business, and hear valuable advice. In her other Graduate Assistant position, Jie helped Dr. Colleen P. Kirk with her marketing research.

Moreover, Jie has recently obtained a paid internship position as a middle school teacher for Harlem Children’s Zone. When discussing this position, Jie states, “This experience is really important to me because I am the first Asian teacher in this school. Through this internship, I have learned more about American society, and I have helped many children in their studies as well as shared my knowledge and culture with them.”
