Style / Men’s

By Adam DistlerStyle Editor  If Mother Nature is a good enough sport this spring, then she hopefully won’t surprise us with more of this tumultuous winter weather. With all of the unseasonably warm spikes in temperature during this winter, it seems as though we can attempt to dress for an early spring. You can now put away those bulbous winter jackets. Last month, I discussed layering yourself to be flexible with the fluctuating cold and warmth. Thus, the logical way to dress for spring is removing a layer or two from your regular outfit. The best year-round garment for guys is no other than a hooded sweatshirt, or a simple hoodie. This popular item is convenient because it’s thin enough to wear over a shirt and under another jacket or blazer. You could just go with the simple college hoodie, or the generic one with the kangaroo pouch in front, but that honestly would be too boring. For some trendy-looking hoodies, you can get some ideas from Revolve Clothing and Yellow Rat Bastard and their online stores. If the prices are too steep, then hop down to Century 21 on Cortlandt Street for something more affordable. If you’re not a fan of hoodies, there are always other alternatives, like a track jacket. The beauty of wearing these is that you can sometimes wear them in layers of two, (if need be). The same ideas and websites apply to track jackets. This year’s trends are leaning towards Mod (or modernist). In other words, horizontal or diagonal stripes, and solid lines or colors are in. The horizontal stripes makes the body look wider, while in comparison, the vertical stripes slenderizes and makes the body look taller. Another fitting look for these jackets and sweatshirts are any all-over pattern, as long as its not too garish or gaudy looking. Subtlety with your patterns will push your look further than something overly bright which could bring much more attention to a sloppy look. On those cooler spring nights, track jackets and hoodies may not be enough. You can always re-introduce a lighter winter coat, but let me suggest an alternative. Wearing a lighter, form fitting pin-strip blazer can provide an extra layer of warmth on top of the jacket (or two). I not only mean lighter in weight, but lighter in color to create a nice contrast from solid Mod styles.Combined with any pair of jeans, you now have a pretty general idea of how to appropriately dress for the coming spring weather. When the more enjoyable side of spring shows its face, just remove the layers to a single jacket or even (gasp!) just a shirt!
