Interview 101
By Leah VealCareer Editor Interviewing skills are crucial this time of year when many students begin vying for summer internship and job positions. Most students are nervous during their interviews and need all the help they can get in order to prepare for their big day and succeed. Below are some pointers from Charlene DeGregoria, Associate Director of the NYIT Career Services Office. What are some essential things to do before an interview?Research the company. Know more than what you read on the home page of their website. Think seriously why you want to work for this company. What questions should an interviewee ask?Based on your research, ask questions that show you have done your homework on the company and will build upon the information. Also ask questions that will give you a better picture about the position you are perusing, how it fits in the organization, what happened to the person who had this position before, where does one go from this position forward and what is their description of the ideal candidate for this position. What’s an intelligent way to answer a difficult question without stumbling over words?First, make sure you understand the question; ask the interviewer to clarify or repeat the question. Then, take a moment before you answer. You can say “That’s a good question.” This will give you a moment to compose a good answer. What are ways to respectfully decline answering inappropriate personal questions?Reflect back to the employer the concern they may have which has prompted the question. For example, you may be asked if you have young children. You might say “Are you concerned that I may be unable to balance the demands of this position with outside obligations? Or “How does my answer add to your understanding of my qualifications for this position?” What’s the best way to follow up with your interviewer?Always send a thank you note immediately that reinforces your commitment and enthusiasm for the position, possibly adding some additional information or making a positive comment on something you learned through your meeting. Some people will say email your thank you because it’s quicker than snail mail; some say do both. Whatever you choose, make sure you get the contact information from the people who interviewed you. Additional important interview tips.Control the elements you have control of such as how you dress, your presentation style, your company research, getting correct directions to the location, being on time, being courteous, friendly and honest. Preparation is your best defense. Attend an interview workshop given at the Career Services Office or schedule an appointment to review some keys interview points. Do a mock interview if possible.
