From Her Eyes

Why did Silda Stay?By Dionisio CastroChronicle Staff WriterWhile many have covered the story of Eliot Spitzer’s resignation, few have focused on his family or the wife that stood by him. As Spitzer announced his resignation, Silda Wall Spitzer stood by him with an undulate gaze that seemed to hide melancholy chagrined thoughts. Mrs. Wall Spitzer could have never imagined that the man she met at Harvard Law School would cause her this much agony, and she probably never envisioned her personal life publicized in one paper after the other, with pictures of the woman that desecrated her marriage in almost every newspaper. This leads to the question: why did Mrs. Spitzer stand by her husband? A talk radio show WNYC hosted on March 11th had a profound comment from a listener: “How many men would stand next to a wife…how many men would put up with that kind of thing and stand by their women?” Her loyalty to her family and her daughters might be the reason. In 1996 Ms. Spitzer co-founded Children for Children, a-not-for-profit philanthropic organization that encourages young children to participate in community service. Ms. Wall Spitzer is also the proud mother of three girls that attend a private college preparatory school located in Riverdale, a neighborhood in the Bronx. She’s been married to the former governor for 21 years and has kept her faith since.
