Another Successful Year
By Shanae WilliamsThe Manhattan campus recreational teams have ended another successful season. With wins coming from all four teams, and one finishing the year undefeated, there is no doubt that next year’s competition should be scared. The softball team played in the Mr. Belding division of the Zogsports softball league and they ended the season 7-0, winning their division championship. They played for American Brain Tumor Association.Men’s basketball, which played in the West Side YMCA league, came in second in their division. The team finished 7-2. Senior Paul James, one of the team’s captains spoke about how the season went. “The season went great. We worked together and had some positive influences.” Although the team came in second place, next year promises to be even better. James gave a prediction as to why next year’s team would go even farther. “We plan on going all the way because we have a good team.”This year was also the first year that NYIT had a touch football team. Coming out the gate the team had a slow start, but the Bears rebounded, finishing with a record 3-3-1 and making the playoffs. Even though the team was eliminated in the first round, they had a lot to proud of. Senior Nigel Chiwaya, the team’s captain, spoking of recruiting players for the team, saying: “the people that really wanted to play didn’t need any convincing. However, I did promise one friend two ice cream cones.” Chiwaya chose the American Cancer Society to be the charity that the team played for. He chose this charity because he felt that it was important. “My father survived cancer, and I think it’s important that others have the chance to fight it too.” Next year’s team can only do better and continue on the goals from this year.Dodge ball. another co-ed team, ended the year coming in 6th place. They won 13 games and lost 11. The charity that they supported was the American Heart Association. When Co-captain Erin DeVera was asked to name a highlight of the season, she said: “when we finally got into the flow of this.”If any student missed the chance to play during the fall, they shouldn’t worry. The teams will be playing again in the spring. Anyone can come out and play for the team of their choice. And while the games are competitive, the main idea is to just have fun.
