NYIT Choir in Good Hands
By Nina Humphrey“Music is a part of all our lives - it can shape who we are, provide a creative outlet, offer an alternative to our everyday responsibilities, bring together familiar and unfamiliar faces, and inspire. The NYIT Choir was created to do just that”. –Kristie Damell, Musical DirectorIt has been proven that students who are involved in some kind of musical activity, their grades and over all performance in school is better than those who are not. Kristie Damell is the Assistant Director of Student Activities at NYIT. She started out with 8 years of private voice training in high school and college. After college, she loved it so much she could not give it up. She spent 9 more years professionally working at theme parks, resorts, and casinos singing. She also spent 3 of those 9 years on Royal Caribbean and Princess cruise ships as a guest entertainer. Krisities NYC musical experience is impressive. Although Kristie is very busy at NYIT, she still continues to keep up with her amazing singing talent. She has fronted R&B/Blues bands, and been member of a professional a cappella groups named Harmonytryx and Rialto. No more needs to be said to prove she is more than qualified to lead the NYIT Choir to success. This is the first year NYIT has had a choir. As a member of the choir, I speak for us all when I say we have come so far. With less than 2 months of practice we have already conquered 3 songs. Kristie has been a great musical leader and teacher. Not only are we working hard and feeling great about or accomplishments, but also we’ve all made friends. Hardly any of us had met each other prior to the first rehearsal and now we look forward to seeing each other and working together every week. Our first performance will be December 4, at Winter Wonderland, at 12:45-2:15 on the 11th floor auditorium. We also have a performance on December 6, at the 1st year holiday party, at 12:45-2:15 on the 11th floor auditorium. The choir rehearses once a week on Wednesdays from 3:45-5:15pm. Our first performance will be take place during the Winter Festival, the week of December 3rd on the 11th floor (flyers will be posted around campus). As the proud father of Kristie Damell, we are so pleased she is able to share her talent with the choir students of NYIT.
