Men’s Style for a (Rather Late) Autumn

By Adam DistlerWith all of the uncharacteristic summer weather lingering this fall, we’re all beginning to wonder whether it would end. Between looming weeks of seventy and eighty degree weather, there were signs of cooler weather and (gasp!) autumn approaching. This can only mean one thing: it’s time to dress for it!On the top of everyone’s shopping list should be outerwear; a good form-fitting jacket or blazer should help you transition into winter. In the case of this unusually warmer weather, a fall jacket might even be a January investment. What ideally looks great is a fully buttoned military-style jacket. Any neutral colors work for this look, but if you need some flair, then look for brighter jackets with larger or tunnel buttons. If you would rather go with a blazer instead, then look for ones with tweeds or tartans fabrics — it’s always funky and in! These jackets are easy finds in retail chains like H&M, but they are more affordable in used and second-hand clothing stores. Again, any fall jacket should fit like a glove!A nice complement to the recommended outerwear would be corduroy pants. Casual jeans and shorts reign in the summer, but corduroy rules in the fall. Even with a form-fitting jacket, loose-fitting corduroy pants look fine and are very comfortable! If you let your pants slouch slightly, the fuller length of your jacket should conceal it. Jeans are everywhere, so you may be wondering where to precisely find a good pair of corduroy slacks. Look to Land’s End, Levi’s, Perry Ellis, and in particular, 7 For All Mankind. With this unpredictable weather, you need something to cover and protect your feet. We unanimously agree that it’s not fun to trudge through any surprises falling from the sky. I suggest any high-top shoes or boots. Avoid ugly utility boots, and go for a classier look that will continue to look good even when grungy.Lastly and most importantly, you need accessories that can pull your look together. I always find that scarves are a fun way to stand out if you’re decked in neutral colors; scarves are the experimental variable. The final touch would be to cover your head with something like a knit cap; they work in a pinch and are warm, comfy, and stylish. I have arranged a picturesque wardrobe; it’s your turn to go out and paint it for yourselves.
